A Parity wallet bug permanently froze a large pool of ETH
In November 2017 a library initialization mistake in Parity’s multisignature wallet software led to a contract being destroyed, making dependent wallets inaccessible.
The incident differed from a theft: funds remained on-chain but could no longer be controlled through the affected contracts.
It became a landmark example of shared-library and upgradeability risk in smart-contract infrastructure.
Immutable code can preserve assets while also preserving mistakes; contract dependency graphs deserve explicit review.
