Shapella enabled withdrawals of staked ETH
The April 2023 Shanghai-Capella upgrade added withdrawal functionality for validators and stakers after the Beacon Chain transition.
It completed an important lifecycle feature that was intentionally deferred during the Merge.
The upgrade showed how Ethereum split a high-risk consensus transition from later economic functionality.
Withdrawal queues and protocol rules still govern timing; “withdrawable” does not mean every stake can exit instantly.
