The SEC’s DAO report applied securities analysis to token sales
In 2017 the SEC published a report concluding that DAO tokens at issue were securities under the facts and circumstances described in the document.
The report connected a crypto fundraising event with existing U.S. securities-law analysis rather than announcing a universal token classification rule.
It became an early reference point for later debates over token issuance, disclosure and investment contracts.
The document’s fact-specific reasoning matters; it should not be simplified into a claim that every digital asset is a security.
