EIP-4844 created a temporary data lane for rollups

EIP-4844 introduced blob-carrying transactions that make rollup data available under a separate fee market and retention model.

Proposal / specification year: 2024First published

The design targets a cheaper path for rollup data than ordinary calldata while avoiding a full sharding implementation in the same upgrade.

It was a major step in Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap and changed the cost base for L2 systems.

Blob capacity is finite and rollup fees still depend on demand, sequencer policy and the rollup’s own costs.
