The Bitcoin white paper reframed online payments around proof of work
Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 paper described peer-to-peer electronic cash that could prevent double spending without a central payment operator.
The design linked timestamped transactions into proof-of-work blocks, using the longest accumulated-work chain as a shared ordering mechanism.
Its historical importance is architectural: it joined earlier cryptographic ideas into a system that could continue operating among mutually unknown participants.
The paper did not remove every trade-off; later experience made custody, volatility, governance and transaction capacity central parts of the public debate.
